Samsung Acquires Sonio, Boosting Its Medical Device Capabilities

Samsung Medison, an affiliate of Samsung Electronics, has announced the acquisition of 100% of the shares of Sonio SAS, a firm specializing in AI software for fetal ultrasound. This move sees Samsung further strengthening its global leadership position in medical equipment.

About the Acquisition

Sonio SAS, established in 2020, is dedicated to enhancing women and children’s health through medical advancements. The company has developed IT solutions and AI assistant features for obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound, assisting medical professionals in the evaluation and documentation of ultrasound exams.

Their product, Sonio Detect, is an FDA 510(k) cleared AI assistant that leverages deep learning networks to ensure higher image quality in real time, improving quality of care through greater clinical accuracy.

Following the acquisition, Sonio will remain an independent company, headquartered in France, and will continue its commercial growth independently. Sonio’s products and services will remain compatible with all ultrasound device makers.

Impact on Prenatal Care

With the acquisition of Sonio, Samsung Medison aims to bring to market breakthrough AI-enhanced workflows and accelerate innovation in patient outcomes and quality of prenatal care.

Yong Kwan Kim, Samsung Medison CEO, expressed his admiration for what the Sonio team has built in the area of maternal care. The collaboration with Sonio will bring together best-in-class ultrasound AI technology and reporting capabilities to bring a paradigm shift in the prenatal ultrasound exam.

Sonio’s CEO, Cécile Brosset, also welcomed the acquisition, stating that the combination of Samsung Medison’s global ultrasound business with Sonio’s advanced AI creates an exciting growth opportunity for both sides.

Regulatory Approvals

The acquisition is subject to applicable regulatory approvals, including the approval of the French Ministry of the Economy and Finance.
