Published about 1 year ago

OpenAI, under the leadership of Sam Altman, is reportedly seeking additional financial support to further develop a ‘superintelligence’ tool. This news was first reported by the Financial Times, following a conversation with Altman.

OpenAI’s Growth Trajectory

Altman emphasized the company’s focus on advancing artificial general intelligence (AGI), its safe implementation, and the significance of their ongoing superintelligence research. He described AGI as the next crucial step in OpenAI’s impressive growth journey.

OpenAI’s diverse portfolio, including research labs, APIs, partnerships, and products such as ChatGPT and the GPT Store, all contribute to their ultimate goal of creating “intelligence, magic intelligence in the sky”. Altman noted that the company is striving to refine this process, as safety considerations necessitate predicting the capabilities of such advanced AI.

Microsoft’s Investment and Partnership

Microsoft has previously backed OpenAI with a $10 billion investment, and later expanded the partnership to become the exclusive cloud provider and to develop new AI-powered experiences. Altman, however, did not provide exact details about the capabilities of the speculated next-generation “GPT-5” model.

The AI Investment Race

The AI race isn’t confined to OpenAI and Microsoft. Tech giant Google is also reportedly planning to invest a significant amount in Character.AI, a fast-growing startup. The latter has previously collaborated with Google and utilized its cloud service to train models.

OpenAI continues its developmental strides in the AI field. The company recently announced a new GPT-4 Turbo model that supports 128K tokens, and also launched its Data Partnership program. The AI industry is undoubtedly heating up, with various tech giants and startups making significant strides in this evolving field.
