Microsoft Unveils $3.3B Investment Plan in Wisconsin

Microsoft is set to invest $3.3 billion in Southeast Wisconsin, with the goal of bolstering the area as a hub for AI-powered economic activity, innovation, and job creation. The plan includes developing cloud computing and AI infrastructure, creating the country’s first manufacturing-focused AI co-innovation lab, and launching an AI skilling initiative for state residents.

Strengthening Cloud and AI Infrastructure

A significant part of the investment package will be directed towards expanding Microsoft’s national cloud and AI infrastructure capacity. The tech giant plans to develop a state-of-the-art data center campus in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin. This project is expected to generate about 2,300 union construction jobs by 2025 and provide long-term employment opportunities in the subsequent years.

Microsoft is also partnering with Gateway Technical College to establish a Data Center Academy. The institution will train and certify over 1,000 students within the next five years to work in the new data center and other IT sector jobs in the region.

Transforming Businesses with AI Innovation

Microsoft will also set up a manufacturing-focused AI Co-Innovation Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. This initiative aims to connect Wisconsin manufacturers with Microsoft’s AI experts and developers, helping businesses to improve their workflow and accelerate growth. The lab is expected to serve 270 Wisconsin companies by 2030, including 135 manufacturing businesses.

Building a Future-Ready Workforce

Recognizing the vital role of education and training in AI transformation, Microsoft has partnered with United Way Wisconsin, United Way Racine, and other community partners. The goal is to upskill more than 100,000 people across Wisconsin by 2030 on generative AI. This includes training locals to use new applications, such as Microsoft Copilot, a suite of Microsoft AI services designed to enhance productivity and creativity.

Supporting the Local Community

Microsoft’s investment will also focus on bolstering the local community through long-term education and youth employment programs. In collaboration with the Racine Unified School District, the company will expand the Girls in STEM program to two additional middle schools. This expansion will provide STEM education for over 500 middle school-aged girls in the next five years.

Environmental Responsibility

As part of its commitment to protect the environment, Microsoft has partnered with National Grid to build a new 250-megawatt solar project in Wisconsin, expected to commence operations in 2027. The new data center will incorporate a closed-loop cooling system that uses recycled water, marking a significant step towards sustainability and responsible resource management.
