Google Unveils AI-Powered Video Creation App

Published 7 months ago

Google has discreetly launched a new AI-powered video creation application known as Google Vids. The app is tailored towards Google Workspace users and leverages the capabilities of Google Gemini to facilitate the production of informational videos for the workspace.

Google Vids in Beta Testing

Google Vids is currently undergoing beta testing with a select group of Google Workspace Labs users. The online tool incorporates some of the AI features previously seen in other Google apps, such as Docs, Sheets, and Slides. However, Google Vids offers unique features, including the ability to manually construct a video storyboard using personal media or AI-generated content based on basic words and prompts.

This innovative feature allows users to compile more informative videos in a shorter time frame by uploading their media to the storyboard and selecting from a range of stock videos, images, and background music. In addition, Google Vids includes a voiceover feature, which enables users to generate or craft a script using AI. The app’s interface, which closely resembles Google Slides, is user-friendly and straightforward to navigate.

Primary Functions of Google Vids

Google Vids is designed primarily for work-related tasks. It’s not intended for creating personal YouTube videos, but rather serves as a tool for creating sales training videos, onboarding videos, vendor outreach, and project updates.

Users will have full access to various styles and templates, and, like all Google Workspace apps, Google Vids supports collaboration. Colleagues can participate in content creation or provide feedback on the work.

This paid Google product is primarily for enterprise and work use. Videos are restricted to under three minutes, and currently, it lacks YouTube integration. However, more features could be on the horizon soon.

Comparison to Other Platforms

Google Vids bears resemblance to Microsoft’s own Clipchamp, a free online video editor for both consumer and enterprise users. Clipchamp includes an AI video editor tool that can auto-compose short videos using your content by understanding the scenes in your media. It also features an AI voiceover tool, capable of turning text into speech.

Google’s new offering in the video editing space seems poised to add a new level of convenience and efficiency to video production in the workspace.
