Tech giant Apple has acquired Datakalab, a company specializing in algorithm compression and embedded AI systems. The deal, which was concluded on December 17 of last year, was subtly conducted but noted in a European Commission filing.

Expanding Apple’s AI Capabilities

While the financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed, it is believed that this move forms a part of Apple’s wider plan to infuse more sophisticated AI technology into its devices. This includes those expected to be introduced in the upcoming iOS 18. Datakalab, founded by Xavier and Lucas Fischer in 2016, has been a significant force in the AI technology realm. Their focus on high-efficiency, low-power deep learning algorithms that operate independently of cloud-based systems aligns with Apple’s commitment to user privacy, data security, and reliable performance.

Apple’s interest in Datakalab could be attributed to the startup’s expertise in compressing neural networks to function effectively on portable devices like smartphones and tablets. This ability to process data locally minimizes the risk of data breaches and ensures faster processing times.

Apple’s Shift Towards On-Device AI

Apple’s LLM is set to operate entirely on-device, a departure from most existing AI services which rely on the cloud. This decision may limit Apple’s AI tools’ capabilities in certain instances compared to direct cloud-based competitors. However, reports suggest that Apple could overcome these limitations by licensing technology from Google and other AI service providers.

Datakalab’s Previous Collaborations

Prior to its acquisition, Datakalab collaborated on high-profile projects with the French government and Disney. The company developed technology capable of analyzing human emotions through facial recognition and visual data. This technology was utilized to monitor audience reactions in real-time during cinema screenings.

Anticipation for Apple’s New AI Strategy

Tech enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the first glimpse of Apple’s new AI strategy, expected to be unveiled alongside previews of its next-generation operating systems at WWDC in early June.
