The artificial intelligence (AI) startup, Daedalus, has successfully raised $21 million in investment. The company, which was founded by Jonas Schneider, a former engineer at OpenAI, received funding from investors including NGP Capital, Addition, and Khosla Ventures. The funds will be used to expand the firm’s production in Germany.

Amplifying Production with AI

Daedalus’ software, which uses AI models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, assists in the manufacturing of bespoke precision parts. These parts are utilized by various companies in sectors ranging from semiconductors to defence. The AI platform automates the company’s entire manufacturing process, from quoting to delivery, for high-precision and high-mix parts.

Influence of ChatGPT

Following the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, there was a surge of global interest in generative AI. Initially, this interest was focused on sectors such as cloud computing, customer service, movie editing, and screenplay writing. However, it has begun to infiltrate more traditional industrial areas.

Daedalus’ Clientele and Market Potential

Currently, Daedalus has over 100 customers that include companies worth millions to multi-billion dollars across sectors that utilize high-performance machinery. The global revenue for precision parts is projected to reach $388 billion by 2030, up from $186 billion in 2022, as per data from Kings Research. However, the market is highly fragmented, with thousands of manufacturers of these parts, and 80% of them have less than 10 employees. These small-scale manufacturers are responsible for creating critical parts for industries such as semiconductors, medical devices, and aerospace.
